Centres of Ako
Ngati Makino Heritage Trust, in association with Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Maori implemented the “Community Based Language Initiative” taking learning of our "reo tupuna" into our homes and onto the marae.
This initiative has enabled us to establish weekly "Centres of Ako' sessions throughout our our rohe as an opportunity for members to increase their capacity and capability with Te Reo using Te Ataarangi method of learning.
As an enhancement to, and in support of our weekly Te Ataarangi classes participants also committed to attending monthly noho wānanga held at Otamarākau Mārae.
The kaupapa for the wānanga, ‘hui rumaki reo’ or total immersion for the duration of the wānanga. Participants are encouraged to “korero kei roto i te reo Māori i nga wa katoa” (speak te reo all the time).
This is a learning environment where participants are learning together. Everyone is encouraged to be supportive, reassuring and understanding to fellow participants at all times.
