Ngāti Mākino are currently seeking to engage with our members that specialises in digital infographic systems.

An understanding of the kōrero and values of Mākinotanga will be advantageous. This is an opprtunity that will transition into document design, presentative templates and icons that will be utilised in our Research plans, GIS Systems, PPT and Word templates.

This small project is in collaborate with the Ngāti Mākino Rangahau team with the details and description of the work outlined after expression of interest. Note that Ngāti Mākino members will be of priority to the project.

Firewood For Sale

Once again Ngāti Makino are offering our koeke one free load of firewood (2 cubic meters split) and the opportunity to purchase additional wood this season at a discounted rate.

Mākino whanau and members of the public will also be given the opportunity to purchase this wood with priority going first to koeke and whanau then to others.

Rates:

Koeke – An additional two cubic meters split pine (delivered and tipped on site) $160 (or pick-up)

Makino Whanau - Two cubic meters split pine (delivered and tipped on site) $200 (or pick-up)

Others – Two cubic meters split pine (delivered and tipped on site) $360

Kia aho matuahia te taketake – Kia tūwaerea te tau a Mākino. Kia hiwa rā!

Our team are intent on delivering opportunities for Ngāti Mākino uri both within our rohe and without.

Progress is occurring on numerous projects at the moment due to the availability of opportunities overlapping. This is placing our organisation under pressure trying to ensure that the best opportunities are able to be realised.

Aroturuki-ā-rohe / Ecosystem and Cultural Monitoring

It is our pleasure to welcome John Rapana to our team as Aroturuki-ā-rohe / Ecosystem and Cultural Monitor. John has now completed studies for his degree from the University of Waikato and is contributing his expertise on a number of the projects we are involved in.

Regional Planning

There is a lot of activity in the regional planning space with the Plan Changes regarding water being negotiated and the mediation processes requiring a lot of work. We are collaborating with Mōtītī Rohe Moana Trust on Plan Change 9 mitigations and monitoring developments in the other Plan Changes being advanced (PC10, PC12 and PC14).

ArcGIS

We are also continuing to develop our geographic information system database which is the basis for our Iwi Management Plan and integrated catchment management and monitoring. We are working on the details with Regional Council to fulfill this outcome in the near future.

Ngā Rangahau A Mākino

Ngā Rangahau A Mākino is also busy with the second phases of the National Science Challenges all under negotiation all over Aotearoa. Ngā Rangahau A Mākino have been invited to participate in a couple of challenges and are working hard to ensure that this participation is properly aligned to our strategic plan priorities as the five year timeframe involved requires a long view commitment and a clearly thought through development and implementation strategy. In this regard we are positioning to get the best outcomes from the research to support a land-based aquaculture venture and diversification of forestry options on our whenua.

Grants

Our 2019 Grants round has now closed and many of our koeke who received grants last year have returned their confirmation letters thank you. There may be newly ‘of age’ koeke over this coming year who will need to apply before in the next round as these grants are not automatic. Kaumatua firewood is being processed near Rotorua at a temporary site with a workforce having been inducted and deliveries have started. With the changable weather now and the more challenging work conditions, our team will do our best but this year it may not be possible to achieve the same level of support for our kaumatua. The reasons for this are complex and largely outside the control of NMIA but our Board of Trustees will be looking at a strategy to create a more permanent basis for this in future years.

Wananga Cancellation

Unfortunately our first 2019 Mākino wānanga on the 16th of March had to be cancelled due to low registrations, while our Deed of Settlement Dinner on the 6th of April has been deferred to be a biennial or two yearly event. We did see many of our koeke at Otamarākau on Friday 29th March when we hosted Te Arawa Pukenga Koeke hui.

Office Location

Finally we are hoping that the issues frustrating our occupation of the Pukehina School research site and the firewood processing can be resolved soon so that the benefits of both of these initiatives can be realised again soon in 2019.

Ngāti Mākino are expanding our team to include cultural monitoring, resource consent processing and research capability that empowers the best management of the Ngāti Mākino rohe. This is a multi-faceted role that includes activities ranging from research support; resource consent processing; on-site cultural monitoring of earthworks; to drone deployment gathering video data for cultural and ecosystem monitoring purposes.

You will join a small professional team in this exciting and challenging role. The successful candidate is expected to have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or similar, a high level of technical ability, and strong cultural awareness.

As Cultural and Ecosystem Monitor, you will have responsibility and accountability for monitoring and reporting on all landscape and seascape modification occurring within the Ngāti Mākino rohe.

Cultural monitoring, analysis and reporting

Monitoring of cultural sites
On-site Cultural monitoring of earthworks for a range of projects
Drone deployment to capture aerial video footage for Ngāti Mākino resources
Contribution to Report Preparation using established formats • Ngāti Mākino Heritage Trust event planning and equipment management

Reporting to the Ngāti Mākino Kaiwhakahaere Mātua / General Manager, you will have proven technical skills, experience in iwi advancement and knowledge of Ngāti Mākino. You will have knowledge of Te Reo me ona tikanga and good written communication, computer and media skills.
You will have the ability to identify and promote the best interests of Ngāti Mākino and work in collaboration with the Kaiwhakahaere mātua, other Hapū and Iwi in a way that positively contributes to the achievement of our strategic aspirations.

There are a number of opportunities that were identified in the Plan that we would like to discuss:

Pouwhenua: what and possible locations need to be considered so they can be prioritised for budgeting purposes
Wetland restoration: we have a proposed planting plan for consideration
Sites of significance: as appropriate, sites are to be identified so they can be acknowledged in an appropriate manner
Interpretation: throughout the project area there is an opportunity to tell pakiwaitara
Mural: this is a new opportunity we want to raise. There is a control building to be constructed for the equipment that will operate the culvert gates. There is an opportunity to paint the sides of the building with a mural (or similar) instead of just green paint

Mauri Monitoring Project: the Kaituna River Re-diversion Project Data-Gathering phase

From an initial hui held on Friday 24 August at the Western BoP District Council office hui we have developed three Mauri Monitoring survey questions that we wish to use as a basis for a conversation with members of iwi groups involved in the Kaituna River Re-diversion project, including individuals who wish to be involved in the Mauri Monitoring online survey.

We would like to ask you to respond to the following three open-ended questions:

Question 1: What are your views about the mauri of the Kaituna River, Te Awa o Ngātoroirangi and the Maketu Estuary?

Question 2: What specific areas and activities are significant to your mauri within the Kaituna Re-diversion area?

Question 3: What are the likely impacts on your mauri and the mauri of the Kaituna River, Te Awa o Ngātoroirangi and the Maketu Estuary over time?

To enable us to gather as wide a response as possible to these questions, we would like to:

EITHER

1. Talk to you individually. To do that, please respond to this email with a suggested time and place to talk to you.

AND/OR

2. Meet you with iwi representatives to discuss the questions. We would like this to take place before the last week of November if possible. We can attend a hui already planned or support a hui specifically for this purpose.

Ballot Papers must be completed and signed by the member whose name is on the Ballot Paper.

Members registered online will be eligible for electronic online voting and details of this are included in the Voting Pack.

Your Board of Trustees has been busy preparing amendments to the Trust Deeds for both the Ngāti Mākino Heritage Trust and the Ngāti Mākino Iwi Authority.

The amendments are necessary to ensure that;

the two Trust Deeds are consistent with each other
efficiencies now available because of technology improvements can be taken advantage of
savings from reduced advertising and notification costs can be realised

To help clarify what changes are proposed, the attached comparison tables provide a summary of the intended changes.

The amendments will be explained at the advertised Special General Meeting for Ngāti Mākino Heritage Trust and the Special General Meeting for the Ngāti Mākino Iwi Authority which will follow commencing at 3.00pm on Saturday 7^th July. Deed of Settlement Celebration Dinner

This day (2 April) marks the day Ngāti Mākino Iwi signed their Deed of Settlement with the Crown. You are invited to a celebration dinner that will be hosted at Otamarakau Marae on Saturday 7th April 2018 to honour those who made a major contribution to Ngati Makino and to celebrate the signing of our Deed of Settlement 2011. A bus from Rotorua will be available departing at 2:00 p.m. from the Rotorua Events Centre and expected to arrive at Otamarakau Marae at 4:00 p.m.

By now you may have looked at the Kia Makino E! 2018 maramataka and either be bamboozled by all the symbols or like me thinking you need more time to go fishing and in the garden. Heoi ano, here are my reflections on a couple of months with the maramataka and what I am learning.

The long block of six days with everything on it is “Tangaroa to Otane”. As is suggested this is a time of high activity and energy that I am more aware of due to the maramataka. I noticed that I got through a lot of tasks and was very productive during that time – I would have rather been fishing though, so if you were, then let us know how it went and what you experienced.

Closely following that block are several days that are good for reflection and contemplation as energy levels have subsided and we should not try to move mountains but rather relax and be happy with the results from the week just passed.

No reira, kia piki te ora, kia Makino e!

Trust Deed Review – The Ngati Makino Iwi Authority are currently undergoing a Trust Deed review to ensure the trusts deeds (NMIA and NMHT) reflect the purpose and function of each entity. The Trust Deed review will enable NMIA to run their processes in a more efficient way whilst also ensuring beneficiary rights are protected. Once the final amendments have been approved by the board a Special General Meeting (SGM) will be held in order to approve the Trust Deed amendments.

Kia Makino Reo Strategy– Te Reo strategy has been implemented in four centres throughout the Bay of Plenty (Kawerau, Otamarakau, Maketu and Rotorua) in order to revitalise the Reo in our homes, on the marae and within our rohe.

It is our aspiration that:

“By 2028 Ngati Makino reo thrives on our marae in our homes throughout our boundaries and where ever Ngāti Mākino uri live.”

There are still spaces available on this programme so if you are interested in attending our Reo classes please contact the officefor more information.Previously funded by Te taurawhiri I te reo; this initiative is now funded by Te Matawai o Te Arawa.

Moutoroi Pa Site– Huiterangiora convened to bless the Moutoroi Pa site prior to the removal of Pinus Radiata which was wrongly planted in the 80s. Moutoroi Pa is to be replanted with native species to reduce the chances of self-seeding Pines. The Pa site is adjacent Te Kuha A Makino, the headwaters of Waitahanui, and effectively extends the native bush buffer that protects our Taonga from the impacts of commercial forestry operations.

Firewood -NMIA have employed 3 Makino beneficiaries on a casual basis to cutand splitfirewood. This wood is being offered free to Makino koeke and at a significant discounted rate for Ngāti Makino members. Contact the officefor more information or to order yours now!

Mahinga Kai Challenge– Due to lack of entries the Mahinga kai challenge was cancelled. In order for us to be able to host events of this nature we require the support of nga uri. Suggestions on events you would like Ngāti Makino to host are welcome.

Grants -2018 round of grants opened on 2 December and Close (30 March). Key focus areas are; Tertiary, Kaumatua 65+, Hauora/Discretionary and Marae. Employment Opportunity with CEDENCO -Five interns are being sought for an employment opportunity and work experience at North Island Mussels Ltd in Tauranga. The duration of this internship is for four months and is fully paid. The opportunity involves shift work averaging 110 hours per fortnight. Subsidies may be available for travel and accommodation. Ngati Makino Wananga - Mai i Tawhitiareare ki Maketu tae noa ki Otamarakau Wananga -This is the first of three wānanga scheduled for 2018 to enable uri of Mākino to gain an understanding of Mākino history, whakapapa, tikanga whanaungatanga and to learn moteatea. Mai i Tawhitiareare ki Maketu tae noa ki Otamarakau; From Tahiti to Maketu to Otamarakau; This is the primary kaupapa - focus of the two day wānanga. You will also learn moteatea. These wānanga are designed to strengthen you the individual you the whānau and us all the iwi. So come with an enquiring mind an open heart and a passion to learn about your Mākinotanga – to learn what makes you Ngāti Mākino. GRANTS OPEN (2 December) - Ngāti Mākino have a range of grants available for members including, kaumatua, tertiary, hauora/discretionary, Marae and Smoking Cessation. View our grant criteria and application forms here.

Mahinga Kai Challenge (2-3 March) - Ngāti Mākino are hosting their very first Mahinga Kai Challenge where Iwi and non-iwi members are asked to put a team of 6 together to fish, hunt and gather as much kai as needed for your cooks to prepare your meals in time for the hākari. Hākari will be prepared for our Koeke at Otamarakau Marae. Judging will take place at around 6:00 p.m. Register your team of six (6) NOW for your opportunity to win this awesome challenge!! Please note, rangatahi/youth 13+ are welcome to participate but they must be supervised by the adults in the team and the majority of members in a team must be adults.

Ngāti Mākino Wānanga (17 - 18 March) – Mai Hawaiki ki Maketu.

Ngāti Mākino Deed of Settlement Celebration (2 April 2018) - This day marks the day Ngāti Mākino Iwi signed their Deed of Settlement with the Crown. A celebration dinner will be hosted at Otamarakau Marae on the 2^nd April 2018 to celebrate and remember those past and present who initiated then settled our claim.

Poukai (23 May) – An opportunity to join with Ngāti Pikiao and Te Arawa whanui to host this annual event.

Ngāti Mākino Wananga (16 - 17 June) – Whakapapa - Whakahononga.

Ngāti Mākino Matariki (7 July) - Our second Matariki event will be held at Otamarakau Marae on 7 July 2018. Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. Matariki rises in mid-winter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Join us on 7 July to learn more about Matariki. Food, accommodation and entertainment will be provided.

Ngāti Mākino Wānanga (14 - 16 September) – Our final wānanga for the year. Hikoi.

Ngāti Mākino Group AGM (24 November) - All welcome to attend Ngāti Mākino Group AGM.

OTHER AWESOME INITIATIVES

Firewood

This year Ngāti Mākino will be receiving an excess amount of firewood and is offering 1 load (2 cube) free of charge to our registered Koeke living within the Bay of Plenty region (not including Taupo) during the winter season.

Once our koeke have been looked after, whanau can then purchase firewood from us at a discounted rate (rate to be determined).

Any members applying for wood must be registered on our digital register.

Labourers Wanted

We are looking for fit, strong, reliable workers to do a number of jobs in relation to the processing, delivery and storage of firewood.

Jobs include, working with a chainsaw to cut logs, moving, splitting, and stacking firewood.

Training, PPE and supervision to be provided as necessary. Timeframe is short-term from next week until we run out of firewood or deliveries (which-ever comes first).

Pay rates to be determined. Please contact our office for more details.

Te Reo Classes

Ngāti Mākino Heritage Trust are pleased to advise the Te Reo classes will continue to operate in 2018.

Classes commence on the 15^th January 2018 with weekly sessions being run out of our centres in Kawerau, Otamarakau, Maketu and Rotorua. There are four (4) wananga planned for this year which you are required to attend.

The 2017/18 round of grants opens this Saturday 2nd December 2017 and will close on Friday 30th March 2018. The Ngāti Mākino Heritage Trust have determined four (4) key focus areas for this years grants and distributions and amounts allocated to each of these focus areas.

The following are the four main areas for 2017/18:

Tertiary Education Grant to support Ngati Makino rangatahi, iwi and their descendants to attain higher education and to build relationships with Ngāti Mākino rangatahi and tauira who in the future will contribute to Ngāti Mākino development
Kaumātua Grant to support our Ngāti Mākino Kaumātua
Hauora/Discretionary Grant to improve the health and wellbeing of Ngāti Mākino
Mārae Grant to protect, restore and/or develop marae facilities; improve a marae’s ability to meet the hopes and needs of whānau, hapū and iwi; to protect and tell our stories and heritage for people in the future; and improve community links and relationships

Maara Kai Planting Day

This weekend Ngati Makino will be piloting a Mara Kai programme at Pukehina Primary School as agreed within the MOU with the Rangituakoha whanau. The garden is intended to support the school, whanau and local community.

We are calling on any whanau members who are available on Saturday 4th November at 8:00 a.m. to come along and help with the planting at Pukehina Primary School, 1762 Old Coach Road, RD6, Te Puke.

Bring along your gumboots, sunhat, sunblock and any gardening equipment you might have lying around (there will have some equipment on site). Lunch will be provided.

Kia Mākino E! Symposium

Ngā Rangahau A Mākino having been launched in November 2016 hosted the first research symposium in March titled Kia Mākino E! The symposium brought together the Mākino Model (worldview biased holistic mauri assessment) with CBONS, an initiative pioneered by leading researchers from the United States including President’s Professor Lillian Na’la Alessa, International Liaison and Program Lead CBONS-SA.

Researchers from various organisations including NIWA, Atawhai Whenua and Toi Ohomai attended the symposium held at Otamarakau. The combined research initiatives have the potential to create a new synergy that can produce high fidelity information regarding changes occurring in the ecosystem that inform a comprehensive analysis capable of reflecting different worldview perspectives. Those present were excited by the possibilities that the combined approaches introduced.

Further collaboration is planned for 2017 with a follow-up meeting and research funding proposals to be prepared for submission in late September.

Ngā Rangahau Ō Mākino was launched at the 2016 AGM and is developing a long-term focus so that we can learn from the work being done. We already have a strong reputation resulting from work done by the Ngāti Mākino Heritage Trust. We want to know about the integrity of our resources and their availability. We have ocean opportunities (Ki Tai), fresh water and land opportunities (Ki Uta). We are going to use mauri to understand these opportunities rather than just money.

So we need to understand how we will measure mauri. The Mākino Model explains the mauri of our lands and waters, focused on impacts and monitoring. Ngāti Mākino Heritage Trust make submissions to many council documents. The common thread is mauri. A Mākino Model wānanga for the board and our koeke, allowing discussion and debate before the Mākino Model was shared with those attending the Mākino Model / CBONS wānanga on 21st and 2nd March.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the term of office of two (2) trustees, Laurance Tamati and Hare Williams expires on Sunday 26 November 2017. Nominations for the two (2) trustee positions must be made on the Nomination Form available from the Returning Officer:

The nomination form may also be accessed from the Ngāti Mākino Iwi Authority website www.ngatimakino.co.nz.

The Nomination Form is to be completed by the Nominee and counter signed by three Adult Registered Members of the Iwi Authority. Nominations will close at 5:00pm on Wednesday 11 October 2017.

Candidates are required to provide a brief curriculum vitae detailing their experience relevant to the role of trustee of the Iwi Authority.

For the purposes of this election the iwi register will be closed at 5.00pm, Wednesday 11 October 2017. To be eligible to nominate, be a nominee or vote in the election you must be registered by Wednesday 11 October 2017. Only Adult Members of Ngāti Mākino shown on the Ngāti Mākino iwi register will be eligible to vote.

Matariki Event a Resounding Success

Are you wearing your new Beanie Ōkawa or Ōpaki? Trustee Stewart Ngatai modelled the ngā hau e whā Beanie innovation now being modelled by everyone that attended the Matariki Event.

Tatati Takuira-Mita had this to say.

“Our whānau really enjoyed celebrating Matariki at Ōtamarākau Marae this year. There was heaps of kai which was yummy. The kōrero and presentation was interesting and informative. We loved the Beanies that were given out for us to represent Ngāti Mākino. What an awesome idea! and perfect for this time of year. Holding the event at the marae was awesome as it gave the option for whanau to stay, if needed. A huge mihi to all the organisers and ringawera.”

It really was a fabulous dinner, “kua puta a pito”, and staff contributions were acknowledged, Ngāti Mākino grant recipients congratulated, and the new Beanie introduced. The Beanie design features the Ngāti Mākino monogram on one side and the phrase Kia Mākino E! on the opposite side. This allows the beanie to be worn Ōkawa (Monogram to front), Ōpaki (phrase to the front), or unsure about the hui sideways one way, unsure about yourself sideways the other way. One of the whanau described the beanie as Ngāti Mākino’s version of the mullet haircut – all business at the front and a party at the back.

It was also movie night, with a special screening of Ngā Iwa Ō Matariki courtesy of Ahorangi Associate Professor Rangi Mātāmua. The 15 minute movie was the perfect end to the evening leaving

everyone fulfilled physically, intellectually, and spiritually. Themovie was prefaced with a sampling of different representations of Matariki or the Pleiades constellation from around the world. These images illustrated how different cultures value Matariki and emphasised for those present the need to revitalise our own understandings so that in 2018 we can celebrate our new year including the particular Mākino nuances that make Matariki unique at Ōtamarākau.

A muri tera ka ako matou, e pā ana ki te whetu i roto i te rangi, nga whetu hou me nga mahi o nga whetu o Matariki. I matakitaki tatou he kiriata. He tino kiriata pai. I te mutunga o te ra, tatou katoa korero i roto i te po. Ko te ata i muri mai, parakuihi tatou, whakapai te marae, poroporoake. Ae, I tautoko ke ki te kawa me nga tikanga maori kua whakakite matou kei runga i te marae. I tutaki matou ki te whanau whanui, whanau hou. Ko te mea nui mo ta maua tamariki.

He ataahua rirerire i tera ra whakata. Ko te mea nui, e mihi mai, me mihi atu no reira tena koutou tena koutou mauri ora ki a tatou.

Anei he whakatauki: Ina kei te mohio koe ko wai koe, I anga mai koe I hea, kei te mohio koe, kei te anga atu ki hea. Tae hoki nga whetu!

Waitahanui-A-Hei was available for whanau to stay overnight and an early rise was rewarded with an awesome night sky that gradually gave way to an amazing sunrise captured in the image below.

We are now planning for this to become an annual event. Next year the event will be better promoted, some transport provided, and more cool ideas.

Last month I went to Ōtamarakau to celebrate Matariki. Acknowledgments to the family and organisers of Ngāti Mākino. Thankyous.

Here are my thoughts. We were amazed at the extent and nature of the planned project over the weekend. The day opened, with a Powhiri to welcome the visitors, then we sat down to eat, as one. Very beautiful food. After that we learnt about the stars in the sky, new stars and the purpose of these stars.

We watched a film about Matariki. A very good film. At the end of the day we all sat and talked through the night. The next morning, we ate breakfast, cleaned the marae then said our farewells. Fully in support of the protocols, the culture shown to us on the the marae. We meet wider family, new family which is very important for our children.

It was a exceptionally beautiful weekend. It is very important that we thank you all so much. Here’s a proverb: If you know who you are and where you are from, then you will know where you are going. Reach for the stars!

This notice is to inform the community that Pukehina School has not received any correspondence from the Ministry saying that the school will be closing.

A concern only, has been raised about our falling roll and we have been asked how we intend to grow our school into the future.

Please let everyone know, WE ARE NOT closing.

After the successful launch of the Ngati Makino website and digital communications platform, we would like to encourage our members to begin to utilise these resources for their intended purpose.

"To inform, communicate, interact and engage with Nga Uri o Ngāti Mākino"

In order for us to transition to our new digital communications platform, we require our members (current and new) to "REGISTER ONLINE" which will:

Give you the ability to maintain your own member details (keeping them current and up to date)
Allow you access to our member only content
Provide the opportunity to create and participate in forum discussions
Give members access to funding through a range of grants
Enable Ngati Makino Iwi Authority to keep you up-to-date and informed on iwi related takē
