    PARTICIPATION CRITERIA
    * Teams of six: three female and three male (children can participate but they must be supervised by the adults in the team and the majority of members in a team must be adults)

    * Minimum Six (6), Maximum Ten (10) Registered Teams (FIRST TEN TEAMS REGISTERED – THEN REGISTRATIONS CLOSE)

ABOUT THE INAUGURAL

NGĀTI MĀKINO MAHINGA KAI COMPETITION

Ngati Makino are hosting their very first Mahinga Kai Challenge where Iwi and non iwi members are welcome to participate (see participation criteria below). 

Register your team of six (6) by 12 January 2018!!

Fish, hunt and/or gather as much kai as you need, to prepare your dishes in time for the hakari and judging at around 6:00 p.m.

CRITERIA

Participation Criteria

  • Teams of six: three female and three male (Rangatahi/Youth 13+ can participate but they must be supervised by the adults in the team and the majority of members in a team must be adults)

Hunting Criteria

  • Land, ocean or freshwater harvest
  • Weigh In: 1.00p.m Saturday 3rd February at Otamarakau Marae
  • Combined weight of total harvest declared “Winner of Hunting Section”
  • Catch to be dressed for cooking by the team

Cooking Criteria

  • Cooking time: Saturday 3rd February 2018 from 2.00pm – 5.45pm
  • Cooking to include catering for assembled whānau and friends
  • Food served for assembled whānau and friends
  • “Winner of Cooking Section” to be determined by Judges

Hākari

  • Marae will set net and hīnaki and prepare catch for hākari
  • Rustic kai hākari – Combination of event and marae kai
  • Prize giving to be held during hākari

Judging

  • Judging panel will include special guests.  
  • Samples of cooked dishes presented to Judging Panel at 6.00pm
  • Overall winners to be determined by “Combined Overall Scores” of the “Hunting and Cooking Sections”
