Te Rere a Kahukura
Kahukura was one of the guides that journeyed alongside Te Arawa waka ensuring their safe passage across the Pacific Ocean to Aotearoa. According to Ngāti Makino tradition Kahukura lands and slumbers atop Pā Mourea.
Pā Mourea has undisturbed views out to sea and inland to Rotoiti and Matawhaura. Pā Mourea was reputed to be the biggest pā in the region. Ngāti Makino are the kaitiaki of this Te Arawa tradition and also of Pā Mourea.
The wellbeing of te taiao o Ngati Makino is absolutely critical to ensuring our resources are sustainably managed according to the tikanga and matauranga of Ngati Makino for current and future generations.
"We seek to restore, sustain, enhance and protect our environment and all taonga within".
Te Taiao o Ngati Makino is restored, enhanced and maintained as a taonga; to provide healthy land, air and waters that support our people and allow our mokopuna to experience the same relative environmental and cultural landscape as their tupuna.
